What is Boiler Plus?

Energy efficiency is fast becoming a key factor for purchase in the HVAC market place for both engineers and end users. The Boiler Plus legislation follows suit aiming to improve the way in which homes in the UK use energy, by increasing the efficiency of their heating systems.

Boiler Plus is a regulation already in place, (since 1st April 2018) it applies to all new boilers being fitted after this time. The regulations come with 3 key requirements:

  1. All gas boilers installed into existing systems in England to have an ErP efficiency of at least 92%
  2. All gas and oil boilers require time and temperature controls to be installed at the same time, if not already present and working.
  3. Combi boiler replacements to include an additional energy efficiency measure to be installed at the same time, from the following list:
  • Flue gas heat recovery
  • Weather compensation
  • Load compensation
  • Smart controls with automation and optimisation functions

The most popular option of the four amongst our engineers is smart controls, which are also a great option for achieving point 2 also. Our top picks are from Drayton, both great value for money and efficient:
